Ki (in Zen)
In Zen, “Ki” in this context refers to a master’s very individual way of teaching their students: that manner which springs from their personality and the depth of their own Zen experience. At the Kyborg Institute we understand this as a spiritual-pedagogical term.
Our reading
Genuine teaching, in this view, cannot simply be copied: a master works not only through methods, but through their matured attitude and presence. This matches our experience that a teaching becomes alive above all through the person who passes it on (cf. meditation, consciousness & mind).
A note on distinction – three similar abbreviations:
- Ki (Zen) – the master’s teaching manner that is meant here; in East Asian traditions also a word for the life energy (comparable to prana).
- K.I. (with dots) – the Kyborg Institute. The name is a deliberate play on the Zen “Ki”: the master’s attitude is expressed in the K.I.
- AI – artificial intelligence. In German this is abbreviated “KI” (without dots); this never means the institute. (The three-way similarity Ki / K.I. / KI arises in German, where artificial intelligence is “KI”.)
