Numerology – the little astrology for everyone

Numerology is “the astrology of the common person”. It is very simple to learn, unlike the considerably more complicated astrology. It cannot deliver such differentiated statements as a good astrologer, but from the individual numbers and birth dates we learn very quickly and simply a whole lot about tendencies, relationships and qualities.

What we today know as numerology is an excerpt of the great old science of magic. For back then, when all the knowledge of humanity lay in the hands of shamans, magicians and priests, one always also felt the forces that work in a symbol or through a symbol.

To every number a celestial body was assigned. Stars and planets were, and are still today, hints of superordinate forces that influence us. The exploration and application of these connections we have for a long time called astro-logy, because in the working of the celestial bodies there lies an inner logic, an inner knowledge. But in it there lies not only a higher logic, but also, according to old conviction, a logos, a spirit. It is the spirit of a planet, its spiritual being, that brings forth this influence.

It is like with the duck and the chick. The chick can, in nature, first only catch sight of the mother. It therefore fixes its gaze immediately on the 1st living being that meets it. That must be the mother! If it is then a biologist, then the duckling has an imprinting on this human.

And so it is also with us and the planets. The baby is completely shielded in the womb. In the moment in which it is born, it fixes itself on the star constellation that just then rules. It registers the radiation of the various celestial bodies, and that then determines the way it will shape its life, to which forces it feels drawn, or with what it will later have problems, because certain planets stood on the other side of the earth and had hardly an influence. The influence of the stars actually plays a considerable role in our life. Whether the analyses of the astrologers are then later correct depends quite essentially on the intuition of the individual astrologer, who must bring the data and the personality picture of the human into harmony with the star constellations in order to be able to make a statement.

Numerology states that everything that stands in the sign of a particular number is to be assigned to a particular celestial body. For if we use the same designation, then there must also be something identical in an event or a thing!

Numerology reduces the whole universe to certain, elementary units. In this point, the path of knowledge of numerology is thus extremely modern. It shows parallels to the thinking of the quantum physicists. The quantum physicists recognise that everything is created out of the same small building blocks. If everything decays into building blocks of the same kind, into the sub-elementary particles, the quarks, then one asks oneself why an accumulation of quarks becomes, one time, a rock and another time a human. Incidentally, there are 8 different quarks (sub-elementary building blocks).

If we try to think in connections, then that could already build us a bridge to the nature-teaching of the Chinese: in Chinese mythology, the Bagua plays a great role. It is an octagonal symbol, on whose 8 sides the various elements and characters of the I Ching are arranged. Each of these symbols has its own meaning, and it would surely be interesting to bring these symbols into connection with the 8 quarks. Likewise, in the Kabbalah there are 8 holy names or manifestations of God (see there!), and the Hindu religion likewise knows 8 names or manifestations of the one, divine primal power. The wise ones of the various high cultures have thus again and again come to the same or similar results. The names change, but not the contents. Already from these few fundamental correspondences we can derive that there are elementary cosmic laws that appear again and again on various levels. They determine our life, our development. And whoever succeeds in developing a feeling for these things profits from it on all levels of their existence.

Already in the Indian Upanishads, from this view, early ideas of the smallest building blocks of matter are found. The British researcher Stephen M. Phillips has – quite disputedly – tried to draw parallels between traditions of the Upanishads and modern particle physics (quarks). That is a speculative reading, no recognised scientific finding.

Numerology assumes that the whole universe can be grasped in numbers, symbols and values. The physicists say that too. The mass of people had, then as now, only little knowledge. Who nowadays actually knows their way around physics? Almost no one.

This kind of numerology is already relatively old. Exactly how old, I do not know. In any case, I got to know it in India a longer time ago, and there it is still in use today. My first Indian teacher Ishwaran was very versed in these things.

Please note that in Indian numerology the planet Uranus is mentioned, which here in Europe was first discovered only in 1930, and Neptune, which was first discovered only in 1845! The Indian Brahmins thus had knowledge of planets that we discovered only 1,000 years later with telescopes!

Numerology in this form was first brought to the West around 1900, namely by the world traveller Count Cheiro. It does not, of course, have the depth of a mystical doctrine of initiation such as, e.g., the Kabbalah. Nevertheless I think that numerology is well suited to recognising interesting aspects and connections in our world, more than school knowledge allows us. Just try it out! Numerology can give us information about the dispositions and motives of a human, likewise about the essential tendencies of development in the present life and about the karma that they bring along from earlier lives.

The attentive observation of inner connections that numerology demands is a good schooling of our intellect and our faculty of observation. In this way it is quite useful for everyday life in our material world. The intellect is, in the Western world, primarily programmed with “fact-knowledge” and is meant to believe only what “is proven”. When our intellect discovers, through the results of numerology, that there are still undreamed-of horizons, it is more ready also to take up other new, foreign experiences. Numerology can thus be seen as the beginning of a true expansion of consciousness.

Of course there are still some other forms of numerology. In the USA many people have concerned themselves with esotericism. Some authors have written new books with new numerological systems. That is all quite nice. But these works were not convincing enough for me. With numerology, pay attention to the inner logic and to meaningful connections to the Tarot. After that, simply try out how far you get with it! I, in any case, have got on well with this system. I see many references to the old knowledge that I have awakened within me, and there are many connections to the secrets of the Akasha, which I understand how to read. Indian numerology lets only the simple numbers from 1 – 9 count.

The practice

Numerology is an attempt to trace all manifestations in this universe back to simple terms, namely the numbers 1 to 9. Numerology gains its numerical values through “occult reduction”, i.e. a digit sum is formed until only one digit remains.

Example: date of birth 12.4.1956 – In order to make a numerological statement for this person, we form the digit sum. We can also apply the same procedure to another event, e.g. to an important appointment, the conclusion of a contract, and assess the “birth number” of the contract.

1. The birth number stands for the day of the birth. The date we reckon 12 = 1 + 2 = 3 = Jupiter (explanations see further below). The 3 we designate as the birth number. It gives, according to the numerological doctrine, information about the previous karma of the person concerned, that they have already brought along through the birth into this world. The birth number gives, in the other case, information about the karmic connections that led to the conclusion of the contract.

2. The star number – for this we form, secondly, the digit sum from the whole date: 1 + 2 + 4 + 1 + 9 + 5 + 6 = 28 = 2 + 8 = 10 = 1 = Sun. This number is designated as the fate number, star number or karma number of the human or of the contractual partnership. It refers to the karma that this human has to expect through their actions in the course of the present life, or it shows the effects of the contract on the contractual partners! So the life of this human, or the effect of the contract, will in our example run from the 3 = Jupiter influence towards the 1 = Sun influence. It will be the more harmonious the more the human or contractual partner develops in conformity with these star influences shown here.

Example 2: With two life partners, according to the numerological analysis, the following constellation results: 1st partner 5 – 9, 2nd partner 1 – 3. Let us consider the 4 numbers in our example in interaction with one another. In this relationship, whether mother and child, spouses or business partners, we can say that the 5 (Mercury) can easily establish good connections to all other stars (numbers), consequently also to the 1 (Sun) and to the 3 (Jupiter). The 9 (Mars) belongs, with Jupiter, in the line of power (explanation of the stars follows further below). Here we see a strong relationship arise: Mercury creates the connection to all present influences, the Sun is the astral form of the worldly Mars elements, Jupiter the superordinate power influence, which in turn is reflected in the worldly Mars and comes to expression.
