Hands
The hands are our grasping organs – with them we take hold, hold and shape. At the Kyborg Institute we additionally read them on a soul-related level, expressly as a personal, worldview-based view.
Our reading
In our reading, the hands carry the theme of “grasping”, “seizing” and holding fast – also in a transferred sense. With hand complaints the question is worth asking: What can I not grasp right now? Is there something I do not have a grip on? Part of this is letting go: only few things can be held in one hand at once – to take hold of the new, one has to let go of the old. Cold hands we also read as a withdrawal from the outer world; rubbing them firmly together warms and “grounds” one.
The mudra teaching
The Indian mudra teaching describes hand and finger positions that each address particular qualities. The fingers are assigned: thumb = ego, index finger = learning, middle finger = strength, ring finger = karma, little finger = communication. Examples:
- Gyan mudra (thumb + index finger): to learn and understand better.
- Shuni mudra (thumb + middle finger): to gather energy.
- Ravi mudra (thumb + ring finger): to accept karma.
- Buddhi mudra (thumb + little finger): to understand and to be understood.
Mudras are exercises for collecting oneself (related to meditation) – expressly no healing method.
What does that mean in practice?
- Have persistent hand/joint complaints clarified by a doctor.
- Practise letting go of the old in order to be able to grasp the new.
- Try a calm finger position (mudra) as a small aid to concentration.
